| โญ Current stars | The names on 2026 World Cup shirts |

| ๐ Matchday words | PITCH, DERBY, CHANT-tier vocabulary |
The best starting words
Football vocabulary skews heavily toward A, E, I among vowels and S, R, L, N, T among consonants (think how many football surnames end in vowel + S or A). Your opener should be a real possible answer that also harvests information:
- RAMOS โ R, A, M, O, S: five high-frequency letters, and a legend in his own right. Our pick.
- SILVA โ the most common surname in football, tests S, I, L, V, A.
- KEANE โ double-duty E test plus K and N, all common in player names.
- PITCH โ if you suspect a matchday-vocabulary day, this covers P, T, C, H in one go.
Avoid openers with rare letters (J, Q, X, Z) โ you learn almost nothing when they come back grey.
Reading the board like a pro
- A yellow vowel in slot 5 screams "surname". A huge share of football names end in A, I or O โ MESSI, SILVA, KAKA-pattern. Re-slot that vowel to the end on your next guess.
- Green S in slot 5? Think plurals and matchday words (CARDS, SAVES, FOULS-pattern) or Spanish surnames (RAMOS-pattern).
- Two greys on common letters (E, A, S) is information gold โ it eliminates whole categories. No A and no E almost rules out half the nations.
- Never contradict a clue. The single biggest point-leak is guessing a word that reuses a grey letter or ignores a yellow. Every guess must be consistent with everything you've seen.
- Think category before letters. "What 5-letter football things end in -ANT?" beats brute-forcing the alphabet.
Point math: why guess #2 matters most
Scoring drops 10 points per guess from 100. The realistic ceiling for a human is consistent 2โ3 guess solves (90/80 points), and the difference is almost always the quality of guess two: it should be a real candidate answer that's consistent with every clue from guess one โ not a second "scanner" word. The all-time leaderboard compounds daily, so a +10 average edge is a runaway lead by July.
The other 25 points
Every friend who solves their first FootWord from your invite link is worth +25 points โ more than the difference between a 1st-guess and a 4th-guess solve. The mathematically optimal FootWord strategy is, genuinely: be good at the game and loud in the group chat.
