The headline calls: hosts Mexico and USA both top their groups, Brazil and France cruise, England survive a tricky Group L, and our champion pick is France over Brazil in the July 19 final. Group A — Mexico, South Africa, Korea Republic, Czechia

Winner: Mexico. The Azteca factor is real; hosts historically over-deliver in group stages. 2nd: Korea Republic — Czechia will push them, but Korea's attacking edge decides it.

Group B — Canada, Switzerland, Qatar, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Winner: Canada. Host energy plus genuine pace up front. 2nd: Switzerland, the tournament's most reliable "quietly through" team.

Group C — Brazil, Morocco, Scotland, Haiti

Winner: Brazil. The group's banana skin is Brazil vs Morocco on matchday 1 — win that and it's cruise control. 2nd: Morocco, the 2022 semifinalists remain brutally hard to beat.

Group D — USA, Paraguay, Australia, Türkiye

Group E — Germany, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Curaçao

Winner: Germany. Tournament Germany is a different animal from qualifying Germany. 2nd: Ecuador, whose young core is built for this.

Group F — Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia

Winner: Japan. The boldest call on the board — Japan beat Germany and Spain in 2022 and have upgraded since. 2nd: Netherlands still advance comfortably on goal difference days.

Group G — Belgium, Iran, Egypt, New Zealand

Winner: Belgium. The post-golden-generation reset is further along than people think. 2nd: Egypt — Salah's last World Cup dance.

Group H — Spain, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde

Winner: Spain. The reigning European champions are many models' tournament favorite. 2nd: Uruguay in the group of the most watchable matchday-2 clash (Spain–Uruguay).

Group I — France, Senegal, Norway, Iraq

Winner: France. Mbappé at peak age, plus Norway's Haaland in the same group makes this the neutral's pick. 2nd: Norway edges Senegal on firepower.

Group J — Argentina, Austria, Algeria, Jordan

Winner: Argentina. The defending champions with Messi's farewell narrative. 2nd: Austria — Rangnick-ball travels well.

Group K — Portugal, Colombia, Uzbekistan, DR Congo

Winner: Portugal. Deepest squad in the draw outside the big four. 2nd: Colombia, a genuine dark horse to reach the semis.

Group L — England, Croatia, Ghana, Panama

Winner: England. But Croatia have ended bigger reputations — England must win the opener to avoid a nervy matchday 3. 2nd: Croatia.

Champion pick

France over Brazil in the final, July 19 at MetLife. France's blend of peak Mbappé, midfield depth and tournament know-how edges a Brazil side that finally looks balanced again. Spain and Argentina complete our semifinal four. Dark horse to crash the party: Colombia.
